This is a 2 day class with the amazing Karen Portaleo all the way from Atlanta, Georgia USA teaching for the very first time in the UK. These are her only UK classes in 2018.

You will learn:

Working with modelling chocolate

Creating various textures for fabrics and costuming

Painting on chocolate

Patining on fondant

Claudia Pratis Beginner Materika Class

In this class you will learn:

Materika is a technique Claudia developed by mixing her painting, royal icing and palette knife skills in order to create 3d flowers on cakes.

Claudia was inspired by some artists of the palette knife painting and plaster painting and she use the same technique on cakes with edible colours and royal icing.

Claudia is bringing her unique technique to Fabricake for an awesome beginners class where you will take home 2 beautiful cakes.

Poppies (4 hours in the morning) Introduction to the materika technique based on painting and royal icing palette knife. You will first paint the background on the cake then practise on how to create a petal with a palette knife, then you will draw all flowers on the cake giving a 3D effect. You will learn finishing touches with painting.

Peonies (4 hours in the afternoon) You will paint the background of the cake. Drawing the flower sketch freehand without copying or tracing any previous design. You will learn how to achieve the light and dark effect with a palette knife. Drawing on the cake board and finishing touches with painting.

This is a beginners class, you don’t need to be able to draw. Everything will be done freehand without drawing patterns to be copied.

Claudia Prati Materika Intermediate Class

In this class you will learn:

Hydrangea Full Day Class

This class does not use palette knife but is based 90% on painting. It could be attended by anyone that has a good skill in painting and that used royal icing before. You will first paint the background on the cake, then the freehand sketch of the hydrangea flowers and leaves. Then you will paint the flowers and create a relief effect with royal icing brush embroidery, Final touches with dust painting. 
 

This is an intermediate class, you don’t need to be able to draw but a good knowledge of hand painting and royal icing are preferred. Everything will be done freehand without drawing patterns to be copied.

Robert Haynes - Sugar Flower Masterclass (David Austin Rose, Hydrangea & Beech Leaf Twig)

International Master sugar flower artist Robert Haynes will be teaching a 3-day masterclass with us here at Fabricake Cake School. The flower subjects are going to be; David Austin Rose, Hydrangea & Beech Leaf Twig.
 
The class is an intermediate to advanced level and students attending are required to have some prior experience and knowledge of wired sugar flower making.
All equipment will be provided, just be sure to bring a keen sense of learning and a smile!
Our brand new cake school will be prepped and ready.
 
Working under Roberts tutelage for the duration of the three days you will learn how to advance your knowledge in the field of sugar flower making. Robert brings an extensive knowledge base and attention to detail.
 
You will learn:
  • How to cut freehand petals and foliage to give a botanically correct result
  • How to apply edible colours to delicately veined sugar petals, leaves and closed buds
  • How to colour flower paste
  • Correct use of veiners
  • How to make a wired calyx
  • How to make closed buds and fully blended sugar covered wire stems
  • How to thicken stems
  • How to polish stems
  • How to colour, fade, add depth, over dust and paint details (watercolour)
  • All about glazing, steaming & using floral tape
  • Adding depth and ageing leaves
  • How to give movement to foliage and petals
  • Different design of arrangements
  • Adding dew drops

Natalie Porter - Floral Antlers Wedding Cake Class

In this class you will learn:

• Using dark navy fondant to achieve those desirable and elusive sharp edges, with a perfect finish.

Natalie's technique is quick and easy, even with a difficult dark colour.

• Making a range of wired and unwired flowers and foliage - Anemones, Thistles, Roses (using her

signature Rapid Rose technique) Filler flowers, lots of lovely Berries and all of Natalie's hints and tips

for making beautiful, practical sugar flowers.

• Using colour and petal dust to bring your work to life, creating a striking colour palette that really

catches the eye.

• Constructing a simple wireframe to make and support the antlers.

• Wiring and taping everything for a realistic and dynamic finish.

• And of course the all-important arranging of everything on the cake to create this unique and

modern wedding design.

Please note that the cost covers all materials used, including Massa sugarpaste, Squires flowerpaste

and Saracino modelling paste. It also includes the cost of three dummy cakes, two of which will have

been pre-covered for each student before class. Natalie is even going to pre-mix the fondant for you

to save precious time in class, thus devoting more time to teach you what you want to learn...
