Meet the Artist #1

Recently, our resident blogger, Rob Baker-Gall of Mr Baker’s Cakes told you all about a highly secretive project he is working on with a team of uber-talented sugar artists from all around the country.
As part of the project, entitled The Greatest Showpiece, the artists have come together to rise to the challenge of creating an extreme cake, born from the imagination of one very precocious young man and in his last blog post, Rob promised to introduce you to some of the incredible artists that are helping to bring Jacob’s crazy vision to life.

We are delighted to share our first guest artist with you:

Trudy Smith is the founder and owner of The Chain Lane Cake Co. which was set up in 2013 and is based in the busy tourist town of Battle, in East Sussex. Trudy specialises mainly in novelty cakes and particularly enjoys making realistic cake illusions that look like everyday objects.

Trudy is a qualified graphic designer although she has never worked in the industry, and she is also experienced in floristry and children's portrait photography. She started making cakes for her children’s birthdays 12 years ago and decided she had finally found her perfect creative outlet.

Trudy won a silver award in the Novelty Cake category at Cake International in 2016 and then won her first gold award in the Wedding Cake Category in 2017. Her work has been featured in Cake Masters magazine, Cake Craft and Decoration, Pretty Witty Cakes, DIY Weddings and American Cake Decorating magazine. She has also filmed 2 tutorials for Pretty Witty Cakes and has plans to start teaching some classes in 2019.

When it came to choosing an artist to tackle one of the most intricate tiers of the main cake, which will serve as a backdrop to the whole display remember, Rob couldn’t think of anyone more qualified than Trudy.

Remember to keep your eyes glued to the Fabricake Blog to find out more about the incredible artists who are donating their time and expertise, free of charge to bring this project to life and to see some exciting sneak peeks at how they are bringing their unique skillsets to the project and what they have been working on.
